Buenos Aires otra vez

Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina
Look where I ended up... again; fourth and final trip to Buenos Aires and this time a more busy social calendar than ever before. I had friends from my Antarctic boat to catch up with as well as those lovely boys I met in Mendoza who live here. Plus I had a bit of admin to do and finally managed to get myself to a football match... there's no sleep for the wicked.

My first night in Buenos Aires was a bit of a treat, I got to stay in a nice hotel and have a great breakfast as I crashed with Grandad and Diane on their final night before they headed off on an Amazon adventure. We headed out to a tango show, which fortunately was not the same one I had been to before... it was a great show and the food was also very good. The next day Grandad needed to purchase a new pair of shoes, so I went along with them to the shoe shop and did my best job as translator. I even managed to notify the guy in the shop that his sign on the door said they were closed, for which he was very thankful. One pair of shoes and coffee later and it was time to say goodbye to a great pair (not the shoes... I mean Diane and Grandad).

The next night I was taken out for dinner by the lovely Demian who I met in Mendoza (remember him? You know, the one who was shorter than me... love you really Bajito). Apparently Thursdays are the nights that the "pirates" take out their girlfriends here in Buenos Aires, basically this means it is the night that all those awful men who are cheating on their wives take out their mistresses... luckily Demian does not have a wife and I look more like his mother than anything else so we were not being frowned upon at all. Interestingly we were presented with two menus in English even though I had asked for a table in my best Spanish, rather than ask for the Spanish one he just ordered something that he did understand!

The following day was dedicated to administrating myself... I had three simple tasks: buy a camera to replace the one that was stolen, post a parcel home to my sister and make a phone call with Skype. Somehow everything seemed to go wrong with each of these things and I ended up achieving the square root of sweet FA. The day was redeemed however with poolside drinks followed by dinner with my new gay best friends off of the Antarctica boat - Jonathan and Neil. We went for a grill and this time we were given menus in Spanish! Fortunately they did have a couple of English menus for the boys and we had a great serving a meat from the grill - Neil and I shared a 1kg T-Bone that was almost as gorgeous as his cheeky little grin. I think the boys were suitably impressed with my ordering in Spanish when what we ordered was actually what turned up at the table.

Saturday brought with it a little more luck as I met up with Demian again to go to a football match. I have been wanting to see some football action in Argentina since I got here, but had not got around to it yet. We managed to get to the stadium and buy tickets with no problems, then stopped in a burger place before entering the stadium. At one point when Demian went to the counter he turned around to see me with my blonde hair and yellow t-shirt surrounded by a sea of cops. When it came to match time we were made to go in by different entrances and I think that he thought he had lost me forever... fortunately my great sense of direction did not fail me. Rather than go into the area for the rabble where everyone is standing, jumping and pushing forward inviting another Hillsborough disaster, we opted for the seating area to keep this little English princess safe from harm. The match was between Velez and Hurucan and was one filled with passion due to controversy surrounding their previous match. The game had it all: lots of fighting, mean tackles, heated arguments with the ref, five goals (two of which were penalties, and one which was the messiest goal I've witnessed first hand), two red cards and more yellows than I care to remember - I've never seen a match so filled with cards; and that was just on the pitch. Off the pitch was just as colourful and almost more interesting to watch. Lots of chanting, singing, drums and screaming of obscenities - many of which I could actually understand thanks to my previous Spanish lessons with the locals!

That night I randomly went out in San Telmo with a Scottish guy (aptly named Scott) for a few beers and cocktails. We went to a place that serves Duff beer and has a massive statue of Homer Simpson in the doorway which I found quite entertaining. Then we ended up in a bar with a great blues band and even better cocktails. Just like always on nights out in Buenos Aires the time flew by and I found myself eventually getting to bed after the sunrise the following day - this could be a very dangerous place to live!

Following not too many hours of sleep I went for lunch with Demian again (surely he must be sick of the sight of me by now) and Hernan, who I also met in Mendoza. It was great to catch up with these two for the last time and as always it was sad to say goodbye. That makes six great people I have had to say goodbye to in just three days... the curse of being constantly on the move I guess.

Thankfully Monday brought with it a little more luck with my list of administration tasks. I managed to collar a guy with an iPhone who was in my dorm room so I could make my Skype calls, took everything I needed to the post office and just about got my parcel under the 2kg limit after taking out two pieces of paper that made it 0.15kg overweight and therefore not passable! And I eventually got the location of the shop from which I could buy my camera at an almost reasonable price rather than the usual rip-off prices they have for electronics in this part of the World.

To test out my newly acquired camera I headed over to Casa Rosada and Plaza de Mayo for some sightseeing fun. On the way I got caught up in a street demonstration for something or other. Buenos Aires is random and brilliant and I have enjoyed all four of my visits here. However, it is now time to turn my back on this great city in search of somewhere new to treasure as I leave Buenos Aires for the final time (for this trip at least)...

Well I'm glad my descriptions paint a vivid picture for you both, that's all I can hope for :-) The football was really entertaining... somehow, despite Demian being a bad luck charm and it rubbing off on me we managed to catch one of the best games we could have. Bajito - I will send you a book when it is printed of course, it's the least I can do after all your help recently.

Oh, and Demian... by the next time I come to visit BA I expect you to have learnt your way around the city as well as I do and that you are able to use the Subte system without too much confusion ;-)

You got the subway to work? I really should have tried that connection... it cannot be that difficult! One day you will master it, I am sure.
