Powell River/ Savary Island, British Columbia, Canada
Friday June 14 - we're off early and a beautiful day it is. A beautiful day passing through all the
little towns of 'the Island'  Chemainus, Cowichan, Nanaimo, Parksville, Union / Fanny Bay -- Comox for the ferry at 3 .15 and 1hr 20min later Powell River.
My last visit to Powell River was about 50yrs ago (I was very young) and at that time enjoyed my first sailing experience which ended with a good case of sunstroke -- ugghhh was I ill!
We check in with the tourist bureau and find a room 'on the water, please' - enjoy a fish dinner and set out to find a night market (seems to be the rage here) - unfortunately we get a little lost and arrive as the tables are being folded for the night! I manage a bag of kettle corn for 'the Island' and we head back to the hotel only to realize that if we had exited to the right, instead of left - our destination was actually quite close to home!!

Saturday - the water taxi ( as I am corrected: not a ferry - oh you're a 'prairie berry' the woman says) at 11am.- the water taxi docks at Lund - the end of the 101 hghwy which goes all the way
S to Chile but the northern end is at Lund......a great cafe/bakery is positioned to entice
the water taxi passengers and Dave's parking is just a 2min walk - where we leave our car as no
cars allowed on the Island!
Our hostess Marilyn surprises us by meeting at the taxi - an 11min ride to Savary and then in her 2nd car (one at each dock Lund/Savary) - which has roll-up windows!! - and we drive to Hemingway Cottage .
Marilyn has been here 9years - pop of the Island is 3,000 in summer 25 in winter! Her home is lovely and comfortable heated mainly by solar panels but has auxiliary diesel generator - cooking is by propane and electricity only by generator.   Our cottage contains a bedroom and living room - only about 2yrs old the smell of pine is still apparent!
the highlight is the outdoor shower attached to a 'Prince of Wales' or immersion heater so hot
water on demand - no 40gal of hot water sitting around!
Beach is a short 5min walk and onto a spectacular view of snow covered Rocky mountains!!
The sand is almost white - there is no one on the beach -- it is littered with sand dollars of all sizes and clam shells (you can 'fish' for them) - is that what you do with clams - fish?? I don't
know.....
Marylin was a great cook - she has done some semi-professional catering and is gaining a reputation for 'food' on the Island - she had a reservation for 16 for lunch next week!! - and her main activity as a 'volunteer firewoman' is to provide the crews with muffins!!

Note: the 'system' can't seem to find Savary Island so -- it is 28km from Powell River to Lund and then 20min West by water taxi to Savary Island - reservations required! - the red market is just about Lund, BC .

Monday we take the 9:30 taxi back to Lund - get the car - and meet the 12noon ferry in Powell River to Comox - it is a fabulous crossing calm, sunny - 5*!!
In Comox I call my brother to say we are on our way to Parksville where I meet him for coffee while Pam goes off to check out an apt bldg she is thinking of buying - Pam is a wheeler-dealer and always has an idea (or several) circulating in her head!!
Back onto the highway - into Victoria -- home by 8pm --
Tuesday a visit to THE consignment store of Victoria 'Good Things' - a great store - 1st class merchandise - good prices which are quickly reduced - just like to keep the stuff 'moving' -- then
lunch oh, if only we could find the restaurant we think it's on Cadboro Rd turns out its on Cardova Rd!! ah well 30min late for a reservation at a very quiet restaurant!! my requisite was 'view of the ocean' and seafood - managed both!! great last meal in Victoria!!

Another incredibly beautiful day - I always say you can't do better than 'BC scenery and Alberta
weather' and I have had more than my share of that formula - this trip - great!
