Exploring the Llangollen Canel

After a surprisingly good nights sleep in a bed that would just fit Cooper and Beau we are all up and at em, eager to get going. Not far around a few bends and English countryside we cross the Chirk Aqueduct which gives us a taste for things ahead. Just prior to the Chirk tunnel or as the locals call it, Darkie Tunnel we cross into Wales. Darkie tunnel is just that and at 500 metres long it takes 10 minutes to pass through. The village of Chirk looks one that a few days spent strolling around and exploring all it's welsh characteristics well worth while.

Now onto the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, it is a world heritage site, some 300 metres long and over 50 metres above the River Dee . Skipper Kim took to the tiller as the thought of cascading over the edge did not sit well with all aboard. With people walking alongside it is an amazing experience and hard to capture the moment, hope some of the pics help. At the end of the aqueduct there is a busy turning point with lots of activity, hire boats and gift shops along with the Telford Inn, we head on over for a taste of the local tipple - Telford Bitter ( we are suckers for punishment!).

The next leg is tricky as the canel is very narrow and as such a challenge to get a 55 foot long boat around bends with even narrower spots under bridges and then toss in boats up to 70 feet long coming the other way. All good fun. We arrive into Llangollen around 4.00 pm after a day of sunny weather (for welsh standards) moor up in the basin and then wander off. First port of call is the local rugby game with the locals being flogged by the visitors, right next to this field is a football pitch with a game also being played. We then enter into a town that is picture postcard perfect, one that you could also spend a few days in very comfortably. We cross the bridge that was first built in 1345! It crosses the River Dee and then wander around town, it has a fantastic train station located in the heart of town and old buildings all along the river. We stop at the Corn Mill, now a pub which is situated right on the river (have great pics from this spot). We did a spot of shopping and headed back to our boat for dinner and then bed around 10.00pm - this exploring business sure makes one sleep well!
