Brussels on a Sunday

Brussels, Flanders, Belgium
Everyone needs to spend a Sunday within the confines of central Brussels. The 50,000 plus people that were here last night have turned up again and some. Fine and bright again, shorts weather.

A footnote: I forgot to mention that on arrival to the city yesterday coming up the stairs from the train station John with his hands full carrying his back pack had a pickpocket made an attempt at his pride and joy getting a zip on his pocket half way before John brushed him away! The prize at risk was his kiddie tablet in that particular pocket . Just imagine.

The bells of the cathedral draw us in, plus it is on the way. How come a building that would seat a truck load only has a Morris minor number in it? Still we did our bit Grandmon. We wander back to the magnet that is the Grand Place. The sheer vibe on a Sunday just draws one in.

We came across a real nugget, now keep in mind this square could quite possibly have 5,000 people in it at any one time from 10.00am to 10.00pm. Tucked away in a basement right on the square is the Belgium Beer Museum. So poorly sign written even we had trouble seeking it out. So many opportunities, both for the people that run the joint and also the punter. Why? You go down a set of stairs into a dungeon like setting, ol mate is there to stop you getting any further unless you come up with 5 euro for no guarantee of anything, he does mention that it includes a beer sample - we bite. A side note is that there are no WC's anywhere and we were busting, if you do find one its 50 cent euro regardless of your business . At this point even the 5 big ones seemed value.

Look through the "museum" which was as expected - absolute rubbish. Here is the rub, while the would be if they could be are sitting up stairs paying 5 euro for a Belgium beer we receive a glass included in the tariff, I feel that ol mate has at least another in him so pretend we are nice guys. 6 Belgium beers later we are now serving behind the bar! That's good Aussie smarts at work. Speaking of Aussie smarts, just around the corner wedged between the trillion chocolate shops is the Australian Ice cream shop going gang busters, staff fitted out with Aussie made kanga caps and shirts - not a bad effort getting the ice cream all the way from oz! I asked them where in Australia the ice cream came from, reply in very poor English was - it's just a marketing ploy, ice cream comes from Brussels. He said almost no one questions this. What a surprise.

Now for some more sport - lunch. There are side lanes with "restaurants" along each side everywhere with only a small walkway in between them, they all have touts (many Turkish) trying to get you to sit down. We had great fun trading one off against another! There would we 1,000's eating in this area, where is my mate Bill Ferg when you need him. Interestingly the most popular shop fronts are the Pommes Frites shop fronts, they look average at best is my comment. Another big ticket item is the waffle with more fruit and whipped cream and topping plus chocolate and nuts than you can imagine. Not for me but everyone else is on to them.

We left for a look see at around 9.30 am and did not return to the passion pit until around 8.00 pm so a full day. We cuddle up as have had it and then tap out a few more wise words of wisdom. Good day Sunday in Central Brussels.
