The southern end of the Remembrance Trail

We set out on our last day of our diggers pilgrimage, in this Somme area they can it Le Circuit du Poppy. First stop is in the town of Poziers, this is the town that Aussies get the most recognition as they say the diggers saved the town. All over there is our flag on display along with depiction and cutout of our soldiers, walk into the pub and able to say ripper mate! Then close by at Thiepval is the largest British war memorial in the world, it is where 73000 men who have no known grave are commemorated. This structure is massive and sits in the middle of no where and is just staggering. Stop off at many other sites especially if they have some Australian context - let me say they just spring up like mushrooms.

The main game today is the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, this is where our diggers stopped the Germans just prior to the end of the war but at a cost of so many lives . The memorial commemorates 11000 diggers that have no known graves. Our government have just spent 10 million dollars here, we visited it in the wind, cold and rain as it sits on high ground just out of the town. You are able to climb the tower which gives a great view over the site. Words not able to describe this opportunity to be here, lots of open space to fit in the crowds at ANZAC functions.

A damn fine tribute.

Then into the town, drove up Melbourne Street past the Victoria restaurant and Victoria school and then into the Le Melbourne pub to raise our glass for the lads. A special day.

Hard to make light of the last few days so I haven't, death and slaughter is not a fun business, if you think you are having a bad day just try missing one. This has been an experience that will not be forgotten.

Leaving this part of our trip tomorrow for much lighter activities - off to the Champagne district so stay tuned.
