Catania, Sicily, Italy
First point of call is the breakfast buffet, we did a Wilson's (good tip Mary) this morning and used M-L's freezer bags to do some preparation work so ready to rumble come lunch time. We are on a train for most of the day so need to stock up. Just on the freezer bags, I had a peek into M-L's pack the other day, once I got past the four jumpers / jackets (now only three as one sent back to London) I swear I saw the kitchen sink in there as well! My pack @ 9.5 kg, Maddie @ 7.3 kg, Donny @ 12.7 kg, M-L @ 12.5 kg & Kathy @ 13.7 kg.

Leave the security of our little slice of Amalfi paradise and head back out into the jungle . A trip on the bus to Salerno along the road of 1000 bends, the bus is full but M-L must be as far as she can get on the left side as she has thoughts of this being her final fate, she places herself in a vegetative state to get through the ordeal - she has to forget the possibility of going over the edge and plunging 500 metres, me hanging out the window over the edge.

How many bus rides have you been on, like me I guess, many. Today's one hour ride was the best I have been on in my very short life thus far. How does one describe it - like being on an out of control roller coaster with the only form of safety device at your disposal being a loud horn. The speed in which you go is simply way too fast with just one miscalculation and her wish comes true! True roller derby on steroids still it just seems a bit of sport to the bus drivers and most defiantly a game of chicken, the buses, with their size bully the cars. Think Great Ocean road, reduce the width by a third and ten fold the degree of difficulty . By the way the views are to die for!!

Meet the train at Salerno, this is now going to take most of the day as we are to travel right the way down to the bottom of Italy right along the coast. I catch up with my words as have been busy creating them in a thick and fast fashion over the last short period. Naturally the train is a blend of Italian life on wheels with cats and dogs thrown in for good measure.

Trains that float, not possible I hear you say. This is Italy, where if there is the will there will be a way. With Sicily in our sights we reach the end of the train line, a large ferry terminal provides the most unusual carriage, the train is split up into four lengths and is then shunted onto a specially designed train ferry! True, the trains actually float in this neck of the woods - well yes sort of. We get off the train and now are up on the deck of a ferry for the crossing of the Strait of Messina. Half an hour later we are dragged back out in the train, linked up again to be back on our way . Final destination is Catania Sicily. To get this far we have been in travel mode nigh on ten hours. We fill in a little time then go for a sightseeing tour of the main city area then onto the airport. Get out the map and check out our today's route. We are proud of our travel budget today - we have been able to get from Ravello to Catania including our lunch all on just 25 euro per person.

The volcano Etna is blowing us gentle kisses in the background which is quite impressive. The towns buildings are covered in a black soot, we are told that Etna is active and the towns blackness is due to the release from the volcano.

A travellers biggest annoyance is delayed or cancelled conveyance - our plane to Malta is delayed so airport food for dinner, a big comedown from our last few efforts. Finally arrive into Malta just on midnight, Donny drops to the ground and kisses his homeland soil. We reach our quaint fishing village called Marsaxlokk at 12.30 am some 16.5 hours since the start of the bus ride. An amazing day but we have all had the gong, we have four full days here so looking forward to it, all in weather which by reports will be perfecto.
