Wake to a fine morn, Deb naturally has completed her homework thus day planned. Bridport is the main town just a few miles away, they have been holding a market on a Saturday for a few hundred years so only reasonable that we undertake a whistle stop. As we have collected a deal of additional items for our return on the flying kangaroo we are seeking some ports, a matching pair for five quid are acquired, bargain by anyone's terms. The local brass big band playing, the local dancers dance, brass knockers for Peterley Manor bargained for, Noddy the surprise packet picked up as well.
Next stop is our highlight for the day, we visit the beach area at Charmouth
. This particular area on the coast close to the Dorset / Devon boarder is termed the Jurassic Coast where a entire tourist visitation business has been built - come and find your own dinosaur. It is also important to have the tide on your side, we have arrived around one bell with low tide at five bells so need to find some other activity for a while, what about the local school fete? We meet the areas town crier to be informed that he has just opened said event and that we should pay a visit, also happens to be just a few hundred metres from the beach and we all do love a good school fete. Buy up the bargains, drink the tea and gorge on the home made sponges - one of Kim's favourite past times!
All good but back to the main game - finding our very own dinosaur, we have come prepared so have the hammer at the ready, D & K are well experienced so have some sort of head start. What happens is that when the sea is high it breaks down the cliff face which is where the main discoveries occur, we are talking bones or full casts a million plus years old
. The last full head cast of a Ichthyosaur was found after a big storm of Easter 2000. The beach is full on stone / rock / pebble, the seas are wild and toss the pebbles around then at low tide you explore and find fossils. The main London paper just rated Charmouth beach as the fifth best in all Britain, not for the sand but the afore mentioned activities. We spent a number of hours doing just this with some surprising results, the easiest to uncover around the stones are Belemnites, we were lucky enough to split open some rock to uncover a ammonite. Tis just the simplest things that often bring the best rewards as we all throughly enjoyed this adventure.
Next on Debra's itinerary is the main beachside commercial town of Lyme Regis, think what your minds eye is of a typical English seaside holiday resort and you have where we are, pebble beach with a small beach of imported sand. The movie French Liuentants Woman was filmed here. We wander past the small iconic eateries and pubs, past what they pass off as beach boxes and generally just try to take in the surrounds, even the seagulls fit the scene
. now for the final top off - fish and chips by the beach. The fish is fresh and thick, the batter thicker and not healthy and the chips too many. Lots of ticks here. Deb procured ( just for a short period) a bottle of tomato ketchup for the pub next door as a good serving of this is also needed to finish off the picture.
Funny: after our gourmet feast some in the group need to rest on the beach barrier wall ( our dinner table) normal cast, M-L, the Don and Kim. Slumber is broken for the first two but not Kim. A plot is hatched to feed Kim to the seagulls, well not all of him just a particular part. The seagulls best friend, the chip was strategically placed on said area with all in on the activity, well perhaps not all as Deb was off to the loo, even the patrons sitting at the tables close by. A number of the seagulls favourites are set leading to said area on the slumbering Kim. What a circus with all and sundry, cameras at the ready and all practically wetting ourselves with muted laughter and anticipation
. Seagull taking the forward bait, getting closer to our nirvana then a girl comes up close to Kim to pat the bloody dog which just happened to be next to Kim, we all give her the nothing to see here look but the seagull flys the coop in the mean time. This has the murmur amoung the ever growing crowd growing but can we hold on, seagulls flying low, looks like a friendly beast, come on, chip still in correct possie then Deb arrives back, sees what is cooking, blames me and wakes up Kim. The amassed throng boo, does she realise that has just cost me 100 large on funniest home videos. Close, Kim bemused.
By this time getting on to ten bells, still light with plenty of activity, home to Eype. The lads stop off at the local for a nightcap. Never been in a pub before where every person has a dog, no joke. One has to step over and around them just to get a drink, at one end of the bar there is a large Alsatian sleeping on the bar, difficulty in coming to grips with this English thing. No problems for dogs to be in your accommodation as well, still when in England do as etc.
