Tarabuco Market

Sucre, Bolivia
We arrived back in Sucre from Tupiza and were excited to open the first door of our Bolivian 'Para Ti' Advent calendar! Unfortunately as the month passed by, we discovered the manufacturing of Bolivian Advent calendars is not perfect and all the chocolates seemed to accumulate in the bottom right-hand corner. Therefore, it needed a little shake each day after opening to find one's chocolate!

We settled back into our routine ....and did a couple of trips locally.

The first was an afternoon at El Castillo de la Glorieta, a 30 minute micro-bus journey from the city.
A classic Norman keep with portcullis and fortified battlements it was not but it did have a small clock tower modelled on Big Ben! Built around the time of the silver boom in Potosi, it was the residence of Spanish royalty. We practised our Spanish during the tour...we got the gist.

The second was a Sunday morning trip out to see the famous, colourful and sprawling Tarabuco market, 65km south-east of Sucre. We saw many beautiful textile weavings sold by indigenous people in traditional dress. We managed to resist buying any tut, although Sophie has an ever-increasing shopping list she is saving for the Otavalo market in Ecuador!
Sam had a slightly unpleasant street-food saltena experience, best not mentioned again....
After the market we had a meal in a place where we were treated to some traditional/tourist-display dancing - all for an extra propina!
