Anyone for a meat pie?

Fray Bentos, Uruguay
Possibly the words 'visit an old meat extraction plant' don't appear on many travel itineraries, but with Sam's fond memory of tinned meat-pie cuisine at university, it became a must-do on ours when we saw the name 'Fray Bentos' on the map of Uruguay!

The factory was opened in 1863 when the British beef barons moved in and started the Uruguayan beef industry in earnest . Initially it produced corned beef, then later diversified into soups, meatballs, OXO, tinned fruits, and finally pies and puddings. The factory in Fray Bentos was closed in 1979 as it ceased to be cost-effective and now serves as the Museo de la Revolucion Industrial. As we walked around, the sight that had seen so much mass animal slaughter certainly possessed an eerie feel.

Today, Fray Bentos is a sleepy town on the banks of the Rio Uruguay. The TV series-themed 'Friends Cafe' was a bit of an anomaly, but provided a warm welcome to us (no tinned meat on the menu!)

Onward bus to Salto, 4 hours.
