Off the Gringo Trail...

Concepcion, Paraguay
Despite its location at the heart of the continent, Paraguay is often passed over by travelers who assume that there's nothing much to see. Fair enough, the country has a lack of 'mega-attractons', but (generally) it does offer a chance to get off the gringo trail. We left behind the TGIs and Irish pubs of Asuncion as we arrived in northern Paraguay.

Concepcion, 'La Perla del Norte', is an easygoing city on the Rio Paraguay with poetic early 20th-century buildings and a very laid back ambience . 'Action' around here means a trotting horse hauling a cart of watermelons.   We embraced this authentic South American atmosphere and enjoyed a lazy couple of days.

Onward bus to Pedro Juan Caballero, 4 hours. Border crossing by taxi (thankfully with a driver who didn't drive off with our bags whilst we were in the immigration offices!) Bus from Ponta Pora, Brazil to Campo Grande, 5 hours.
