The monster city...

Sao Paulo, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil
Rejuvenated by the peaceful environment of the Pantanal, we were ready to tackle the southern hemisphere's largest city. Sao Paulo is a monster. The gastronomic, fashion, finance and culture capital of Latin America is home to 19 million people and more skyscrapers than could ever possibly be counted.

Straight off the night bus and unable to check-in to our hostel in the artsy bohemian quarter of Vila Madalana, we launched ourselves into the bedlam by taking the 'free’ walking tour of Sao Paulo’s historic centre . The tour finished at Edificio Martinelli, where we had a great view across the endless sea of skyscrapers from its 26th floor.

The next day we visited the awesome Museu do Futebol which provided a detailed account of each World Cup to date and later took a walk down Av Paulista, the lively commercial centre of Sao Paulo.

Culinary highlights included a ‘pernil’ (pork loin) sandwich at the Mercado Municipal and an overpriced pizza in the upmarket district of Pinheiro.

Onward bus to Paraty, 6 hours.
