Sao Luis, State of Maranhao, Brazil
From one northeast city to the next, the festival of Sao Joao was in full flow and the party continued.

The cobbled streets of Sao Luis' historic centre are lined with brightly tiled, elegantly crumbling mansions . The blue and white Portuguese-tiled Casa do Nhozinho was a particular highlight, inside of which was a museum of interesting (random) artifacts. As we wandered around the old market, we passed by stalls selling dried shrimp, beans and potent local liquers.

We spent a couple of days soaking up the atmosphere of the Sao Joao festival, marked by an impressive amount of colourful bunting, musical performances and a disproportionate number of weirdos on the streets. Sao Luis is also Brazil's reggae capital and really came to life in the evening with plastic tables filling the sidewalks and a live performance on every street corner.

Onward journey to Manaus.
