Stein am Rhein, Schaffhausen, Switzerland
The Bodensee lakeside is punctuated with 'Strandbad', pleasant dedicated swimming areas with changing rooms and refreshment facilities. With only a short distance to cover this day between Konstanz and Stein am Rhein (30km), we took the opportunity to stop for a few hours and take full advantage of the sunny skies and clear waters. And, of course, enjoy a few afternoon pricey Swiss beers.

Late afternoon, we arrived at our next Airbnb on the outskirts of Stein am Rhein, a stone's throw from the Swiss border, inside Germany . We were warmly greeted by Gabriela, our hostess, as she showed us around our own basement apartment, home for the next two nights. The fridge was full of welcome goodies, including Swiss cheese, chocolate and a couple of mini bottles of Sekt, which we enjoyed as a sundowner in our own garden. Gabriela gave us directions to the two nearby supermarkets, one Swiss and one German. We were soon in Lidl stocking up with cheese, cold meats, bread and salad.

Stein am Rhein, located in the south-west corner of the Untersee, is famous for its medieval town centre, including many half-timbered houses and frescoes. Unsurprisingly this attractive town is a bit of a honeypot site, but we were able to enjoy wandering around its streets in the late afternoon after the day trippers had departed.

We made a day trip of our own by train to visit the Rhine Falls, located next to the town of Schaffhausen, Switzerland. It was a good chance to recover from the mild saddle sore that had developed over the previous three days. We like waterfalls...and wanted to add the largest plain waterfall in Europe to our collection. It wasn't bad...A bonus to visiting the falls was a chance to explore the old city of Schaffhausen and admire its renaissance buildings. We climbed up to the Munot fortress which offered a splendid view over the old city and the vine-flanked Rhine cutting through the beautiful landscape.

After catching the train back to Stein am Rhein, we enjoyed a relaxing evening complemented by Lidl's finest produce...
