Around the Untersee and across to Überlingen...

Überlingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
After munching our Swiss muesli in the garden, we set out on what was the longest stretch of our ride (c70km on paper). All was going serenely as we made our way around the Untersee, back to Konstanz where we stopped for a late lunch at a brauhaus with a fine view across the river and town. Excellent Schnitzel mit Kartoffelsalat washed down by a couple of beers.

We continued, passing Insel Mainau, famous for its garden displays and models of excellent environmental practices, until the cycle path headed inland, increasingly uphill and into thick woods . For the first time, with a lack of signage, the trail became difficult to follow as we struggled in terrain more suited to mountain biking. It was hard, slow progress. After consulting our map and realising how far we still had to go, we decided to turn back at the next main road in the hope of catching the Dingelsdorf to Überlingen ferry. On the plus side, we reached the highest speeds of our cycle as we descended the asphalt road. What had taken us over an hour to conquer through the woods, took us less than 5 minutes on our way back!

Fortunately, we timed this perfectly, as we joined the queue of fellow cyclists boarding the last ferry of the day. Emphasis here on the fortunate, as we didn't really have a plan b...On reflection, it didn't feel like we had cheated as very few people choose to do this remote, wooded section of the cycle.

Arriving in our Airbnb in Überlingen, a beautiful stylish family home, we took full advantage of the excellent shower before heading into town to replenish lost calories in a pizzeria. We finished the evening with a night cap at one of the wine bars surrounding the pretty harbour.
