Three years after our last time in Riga, we returned to the capital of Latvia to catch-up with a couple of Sam's friends from the CELTA course who are now teaching English in the city. However, unlike last time when we were enjoying balmy summer evenings in the old town, this trip we were well wrapped up for Riga's crisp winter days. Bisected by the river Daugava, Riga's old town with its Art Nouveau building facades is pretty at any time of year.
This trip was not about smashing through the top city sights, but rather involved an eclectic programme of entertainment
. This included a day at the World Luge Championships in nearby Sigulda watching the sleds whizz by at speeds of up to 90mph, a fun evening at the basketball, an afternoon testing our mental skills in an 'Escape Room' (we solved the puzzle 30 seconds before the doors were due to lock us in!), and last minute tickets to a fantastic Ed Sheeran gig at the Riga Arena.
Craig took us around some of his favourite craft beer haunts and Sam enjoyed returning to his much-loved Riga restaurant, Lido, for his fill of hearty Latvian fare. With a bottle of Riga Balsam from duty free safely stowed in our luggage, we reflected on another great trip to Riga. We will be back...
