Majestic Dunes

Sossusvlei, Hardap Region, Namibia
We were up early in Sossusvlei to climb 'Dune 45' for sunrise.  In one of the oldest and driest ecosystems on earth, Dune 45 rises over 150m above the surrounding plains and the walk to its summit was strenuous.  However, it was well worth it to see the landscape change colour in the early morning sun to eventually reveal bright red sand dunes as far as the eye could see.  In this dynamic environment the dunes, some rising 325m high, are constantly sculpted by the wind and are a stunning sight.
After breakfast we went for a hot, sandy slog in the sun in order to reach Dead Vlei, an unearthly dry low open landscape set amid lonely dunes and punctuated by dead trees.  The contrasting bright blue sky, red dunes, white 'vlei' and brown wood set a striking scene.  In the afternoon, we had a short stop in Solitaire to see some defunct vehicles and taste some freshly baked goods.  After crossing the Tropic of Capricorn, we arrived at our next bushcamp.
