At sea beyond Gibraltar, Souss-Massa-Drâa, Morocco
So it’s the first day at sea and a good one for reading on
the balcony, which faces south, as we head out from Africa into the deep . We
have activities planned: the Cruise Critic Meet and Greet with the Captain and
Officers (NCL and other cruise lines like to keep CC people happy because they
are cruise connosieurs who post reviews on line). After the formal presentation we
met a couple from Toulouse: Jacques a retired chef and hotelier, and Jesse a
linguistics professor. It’s a small academic world as we found we had friends
in common—good friends, research friends, and now new friends.
So the day was spent trying to stay awake while reading and
being rocked to sleep. At 6 p.m. I found Jesse in the Spinnaker Lounge in the
front of the ship on deck 13 for Progressive Trivia. We formed a team which we named the team The Froggies in honor of our French partners. Well, brilliant
Jesse is a team unto himself. I’m just window dressing because you need more
than one for a team. He cleaned the board.
With the sweet taste of victory, we’re off to the French
Bistro for dinner, with two CC people at the next table . It’s ok food, not really
French but how a corporation makes French food. I wouldn’t bother with the
specialty dining if doing this again because the main dining rooms and the
buffet are so good. Here’s the menu: (me) grilled asparagus, seafood feuilleté,
profiteroles, (Jacques) three mushroom soup, rack of lamb, and white chocolate
mousse. Afterwards we tried to sit through a loud musical production in the
theater, but I noticed that Jacques was holding his ear, so we left as we had
an early wake up for Madeira the next day.
Lulled to sleep by the rolling waves.
