Up the Barranco Wall

Karanga Camp, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania
Today is a traverse across the mountain.  It was clear and you could vaguely make out Moshi town 10,000 feet below and yet still see the snowy slopes of Kili above.  Today started with a climb up the Barranco Wall.  Two hundred meters of scramble pretty much straight up.  Since the weather was clear in the morning, it was actually kind of fun.  Like a rock climbing gym where you are allowed to use all the big holds!  It was a little straining at times – especially the BIG steps – as this “gym” is at 12,500 feet!  We got to the top after about an hour of climbing, then had a hike down a ridge, across several streams – more like glacial runoff actually, and then back up the other side and then more steep down and then a last, very steep slope up – but this time with smooth switchbacks.  It had started to rain lightly and we put on our Gortex just short of camp and then, right as we got into the tents, it poured for about an hour.  We just made it!  The afternoon consisted of resting, reading, napping and walks around the camp.  Not much to see here as the clouds pretty much have us socked in with an occasional window popping up.  The campsite is basically on a big volcanic slope void of much features or vegetation.
