Travel day. A few inches of fresh snow so debated hitting
the slopes for a few runs but decided to rest the knee (which started feeling a
bit swollen). Stopped in West
Yellowstone and got a tip to drive state road 191 back to 287 then 87 around the
mountain and past Earthquake Lake. In
1959, an earthquake caused a landslide that covered a campground (tragically full
of campers) and dammed the creak creating the lake. It’s a strange sight with trees coming up
right in the middle of the lake (right where they grew when the spot was still
the shore of the creak). You can easily
see where the slide occurred due to the missing forest on the side of the
mountain. Pretty crazy. A bit further on we saw a herd of big horn
sheep – some three dozen or so on the side of the road. They were perfectly camouflaged in the
surrounding bush (except of course for the ones in the middle of the
road). Got back to SLC around 8pm and
had dinner and hit yet another brew pub.
