11:23 We leave Rome today, our train up to Florence at 1020. As there was a lot of crashing about in the bathroom behind us today mum woke up early and we ended up getting up and out by 930. We sat in a cafe with coffee and a croissant and waited the hour until our train was due. It's serendipity that we chose to travel on a weekend due to it being 2 for 1, so our tickets were excellent value at €46 for both instead of each!
It's a good train, a little like a virgin train in fact, and I've enjoyed train travel since my epic journey through Russia and China. Such a great way to see the countryside, and such pretty countryside. Perfect Lines of grape vines, bright yellow fields of sunflowers, elegant tall thin trees lining roads, red brick villas
17:32 We arrived at Florence at 12 and had to very quickly walk across town to the river to get our keys to the apartment we found on air bnb. Nearly 2 hours later dad arrived and we went off to find some supplies for our stay.
Quick strop at 3 when I still hadn't had lunch.
Walking tour up to the Duomo, something I first saw and became aware of through the computer game Assassins Creed 2, which I found a breathtaking game. People often suggest computer games are pointless but I find now that I'm here that some places look familiar because I've climbed all over them in a parkour fashion via a highly detailed computer game! Having come to the Duomo I am blown away at how stunning it is. A huge red brick dome, with white bordering and a gold orb and cross on top. The rest of the building all white marble, with panels of green marble, some red, small areas of gold. All intricate carvings, statues, almost mosaics of colour. There's really too much to look at.
20:43 We walked back about 6 and had a drink at the apartment, quick change, looking at the low sun shining across the city and down the river, and then set out at 830 for dinner at a restaurant we found on trip advisor at the Osteria del cinghiale bianco.
We set into some chianti wine, and I had pesto pasta and a rocket and Parmesan salad with balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing, absolutely lovely.
