Jerusalem and the Jews: Peoplehood Under Pressure
I am traveling with AIPAC and then the Jewish Federation of North America for their 2013 Jerusalem summits. It will be my longest trip to Israel since 2000 and the longest time away from Marcia since we meet here in 1984. I come in the wake of the release of The Pew Study of American Jews which found that 1/4th of us have no religion, a few weeks after 800,000 people thronged the streets of Jerusalem to attend the funeral of the Ultra-Orthodox spiritual leader of the Shas party, and in the middle of peace negotiations. Meanwhile the wider region is in flames with vast changes taking place in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt and with Iran on the threshold of nuclear weapons capability. My itinerary includes Israeli and Palestinian political leaders, counter-terrorism and defense officials, serial entrepreneurs and venture capitalists, economists and sociologists, and the leaders of AIPAC and JFNA.
