Africa - Hope, Healing and Hodes
Marcia and I are joining 20 volunteer leaders of JDC to explore the Jewish world's response to the humanitarian needs in Sub-Saharan Africa. Along the way, we will be hosted by the "Jewish Mother Theresa", explore the birthplace of humanity, trek to a family of mountain gorillas, walk among thousands of murderers, and experience a two-millennium old African Jewish civilization. My reading list for this trip covers rural poverty, famine, war, climate change, agricultural research, public health, colonialism and genocide. The Talmud says, "He who saves a single human being, it is as if he saved the whole world." We will be asking how that ancient Jewish value can be put to work by today's modern Jewish community.
