Round the World 1988

Our first trip overseas together so we were pretty green. We loaded as much as we possibly could into the largest backpacks we could find. We had no idea about the best time to travel and consequently sat in a hotel room in Rarotonga in the middle of the wet season playing cards and waiting days for the rain to stop. We were delighted to find that LA and NYC did actually exist and were spellbound by majesty of Niagara Falls. Found ourselves singing Irish ditties in a London pub having only been in the fair city for a matter of hours. Missed both flights on a weekend trip to Amsterdam. The budget was tight so bought a 12 year old combi van listed as having 12 different owners so no doubt had been around Europe 12 times. Our priortiies were differerent then. Crossed the English channel and drove day and night to get the Octoberfest in Munich. Everything was so new and exciting we just wanted to keep moving. Soaking it all up like a sponge as we went. Got lost avoiding toll roads in southern Italy and ended up in spectacular Pompeii by mistake. Spent a very memorable Christmas living in an overcrowded share flat in London. Had the time of our lives and only spent $20 a day for two weeks in Koh Samui. We had so much fun we were planning our next trip within weeks of returning home.
