Covid- 19 Summer Roadtrip

In February of 2020, Ed and I decided our summer trip would be a roadtrip to start in Key West, continue up the East coast to Maine, and further continue up into Canada to include New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Ontario. Then we would head through New York to Washington DC and come home on the Amtrak auto train. It was all planned with reservations made. By the time we had gone skiing in March, it was obvious that the year would turn out differently. The coronavirus, SARS 2, pandemic was here. What to do with our plans? A lot of discussions occurred. Ed and I are medical professionals; we took the need for following all health guidelines very seriously. Could we take a trip and still be safe? With alterations in our plans, we decided we could. Preparations included collecting enough supplies to last for three months including masks, reusable and disposable, gloves, bleach, hand sanitizer, cleaning clothes, disinfectant wipes and even a portable air filter. We would mostly have extended stays in locations(2-7 days) with kitchen facilities, buy food at the grocery store or, if we ate out, it would truly be out, as in outside! At checkin, the routine included wiping down all surfaces with a bleach solution or wipes and then bringing our belongings in. There was no maid service so no one else would come into our rooms. So that is how we started. We were hopeful at the beginning that we could keep most of the itinerary. But it would became clearer that the pandemic was going to persist much longer than we hoped and would not get better but worse. Changes would be made during the trip. Also we would be relying on each other for companionship without the usual added fun of meeting lots of folks along the way. An unusual trip indeed.
