The Great Rift Valley

The calling has been long... very long… Hemingway 's 'Snows of Kilimanjaro' captured my imagination as a boy. One of my brothers lived for years in the dust and heat of the Sahel. Another brother works with Médecins Sans Frontières ('Doctors without Borders') in many places in Africa. Yet I did not visit. Over the years I read many many books about Africa - from Le Lion and Tartarin de Tarascon to The Dogs of War and the Strijd tussen Boer en Brit (about the Boer War). And yet, I did not visit. But now, finally, alea iacta est - the die is cast. We will go. It is still many months, but I feel the excitement grow. We will fly upstream over the Nile. We will head for the southern part of the Great Rift Valley. We will rent a vehicle and travel on our own. No guide or other travel company. Just the way we like it. We will pitch our tents in the caldera of Ngorongoro and the Serengeti in Tanzania, then head north to the parks of Kenya. We will travel at ease. We'll take a month to explore. Rest where we enjoy it, move on when we want. I don't need to see any 'Big Five.' All I want to see and feel and breath is Africa. If God grants that, it will be the trip of a lifetime.
