Waking up with the Roosters...My Trip to the Philippines
The first thing that was mentioned in my travel book about going to the Philippines, was to bring lots of earplugs, or plan on getting up early every morning. There are roosters, everywhere. and also Karaoke bars. I like to get up early in the mornings when I travel, so I don't mind the roosters starting my day off with the sounds of nature as my alarm. The Karaoke bars are another story, since those usually don't get started until the late hours of the night, and Im usually calling it a day by 10 pm. Nothing is worse, than laying in bed listening to someone trying to sing the words to a song they don't know, usually badly. Luckily on the start of this trip I will be traveling with my buddy Christine who loves to get up with the roosters as well, and finds the same sense of humor as myself in long boat rides, and makes the best of getting completely soaked as we make our way to our next destination, and even beats me on her spicy food tolerance level. Having great travel partners who love to share lots of great food is a must. Luckily on this trip we will more likely have run-ins with more roosters , than drunk off key singers, because we will be staying once again off the beaten path. In small villages and guesthouses far from big cities and late nights. This will be my first time to the Philippines. A country that has seen its share of hard times, being hammered with its largest Typhoon in history. Recovery has been slow, but things are getting better, but it has a long way to go before its back its normal way of life. On this trip, I will traveling first to Palawan. A beautiful island known for its spectacular beaches and islands. The buzz is out about this spectacular island which is far south, almost reaching the tip of Borneo. Travel in this part of the country is rough but rewarding, with long bus rides and late ferry rides awaiting us. I will definitely get my island fix with over 7000 islands inhabiting the Philippines. After a few weeks of exploring through this region, it will be back to Mainla to trade in travel buddies as Carla will be joining me to visit the popular, Boracay Island where the buzz has been out for some time. The famous white sand beach dominates this small island and the whole island is surrounded by a large coral reef which will make Carla very happy since she would probably live in her flippers if she could, she travels with her own snorkel set and loves the water. This well known island has only been getting travelers since the 70;s, but the secret is well out. I definitely think we will need those earplugs for more of the Karaoke bars here than roosters. So glad to have all of you again along for my journey....
