South Africa - on the trail of the Hudson ancestors

John Hougham Hudson was born in Kent on 10th May 1798. He was Gillie's great-great-great-grandfather. John and his wife, Elizabeth, were amongst a band of brave young people known as the 1820 White Settlers. Both aged 21, they left England to make a new life for themselves in South Africa. Four generations later, in 1918, George Hudson was born in Benoni, near Johannesburg. His sister, Molly, Gillie's mother, was born fifteen months later. On our travels, we will visit Simon's Town where John and Elizabeth landed on 30th April 1820 and we will follow the 'Garden Route' to Bathurst where they were allocated land. From there, we will take the train from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg where we will be able to visit Benoni, where both George and Molly were born, and Zesfontein, where Gillie's great-grandfather settled and George and Molly spent their childhood before leaving South Africa for a new life in Kenya.
