Scotland 2012

This trip to Scotland, our very first, originated around a bottle of Ardbeg single-malt Scotch whisky that our friend Jean Ferrard brought when he came to visit. While we three sipped wee drams of it around our kitchen table, he announced that he wanted to visit Islay, the southernmost of the Hebrides, to visit the Ardbeg distillery. I replied that I had an ancestor that came from Islay, and that I wanted to go there too. (It turned out that I was wrong, and that Alexander McAlister was born on the mainland, but that story will emerge as we go along.) And so, on August 23, 2012, we all flew to Glasgow, he from Brussels, we from Boston, and our journey together begins. But Jean will leave us after the first week, and this trip is not all about whisky, so stay tuned. The rest of it will include the Highlands, the Isles of Iona and Skye, and visits to Edinburgh and Stirling.
