Iceland, April 2013

Iceland has for some years been near top of my list of countries to visit. Iceland has always struck me as a remote and wild pace with a unique Nordic culture of modern day Vikings, a spectacular landscape of glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, sea cliffs, and hot springs, of northern lights and northern seas, massive bird colonies and great hiking. My friend Justin, who I've known for several years and lives in Cheyenne, also expressed interest in travel to Iceland since I've known him. When I found out about Icelandair's new route with direct flights between Denver and Reykjavik and reasonably priced off-season packages, it got me thinking. Ii chatted with Justin, and it didn't take much arm twisting to get him to go with me. Yeay, I'm finally able to travel with a friend instead of always alone! The roundtrip flight, three nights hotel, and full day excursion to a volcano, a glacier, and waterfalls was available for under $700 per person. We tacked on two extra nights and rented a car to get out and see a little more of the country. Late April is still considered off-season but should be warming up and have long daylight hours. That means no Aurora Borealis viewing opportunities but rather see a country in daylight than long darkness anyway. I've been craving some foreign travel again since it's been almost five years since I've been off the North American continent. It has also been unusually long since I've done significant travel of any sort. I've had several significant consulting projects this year which have kept me mostly around Denver since September. It's now quite like being a full-time wage slave, but work had still be interfering with the leisure-oriented lifestyle I try to lead.
