Andean South America, July - September 2013

Well, I'm taking to the road again. This time it's for some foreign travel after quite a few years of not leaving North America on any overland trips. For years the Andean countries of South America have been near the top of my list of places in the world I'd like to see. I've thought about how to go about seeing this part of the world for several years, whether to do it independently as I've traveled in Mexico or to go on an overland Dragoman truck tour as I've done in many parts of the world. The long distances involved have led me to choose to go on another Dragoman trip. In some ways July through early September is a very good time of year to visit this part of the world weather wise since it's the clearer drier season in the Andes. On the other, though, it tends to be the foggy gray time of year in the coastal regions. Fortunately, Dragoman is running a trip from Quito to Santiago from early July to early September which works out well for me because my last consulting gig ended at the end of June. The start date of the tour in Quito so shortly after my consulting project ended precluded both the possibilities of either starting the tour three weeks earlier in Cartagena, Colombia or visiting the Galapagos Islands before it started. Oh well, I'll do Colombia and the Galapagos on another trip. This will be my third time in South America, my first trip being two weeks in Ecuador in 1995 and my second a six week Dragoman trip from Santiago to Rio de Janeiro via Tierra del Fuego in 2003. This trip will connect the two regions I've seen and add two new countries I haven't been in previously - Peru and Bolivia.
