Winter in the Northern Rockies, February 2012

So it's February and it seems like almost everyone from cold states like mine who is able to travel is heading to a warm destination like Palm Springs, Puerto Vallarta, or Cancun. And where am I going? Northwestern Montana - I must be crazy! I own a timeshare in Breckenridge, Colorado which I tend to use for trading for an equivalent week at a resort somewhere else in the U.S. or the world. If I deposit my week early enough I am sometimes rewarded with a so-called Bonus Week. When you're awarded a bonus week, though, it tends not to have much trading power, meaning it's almost impossible to get a trade in a place where there is high demand. You get to go to places at times of year when they aren't popular, so forget using a bonus week at a ski resort in winter, in Mexico or coastal Florida in winter, or just about anywhere in the East and Northeast during the heavy summer travel season. You generally have to settle for somewhere unpopular for the time of year. Perusing my options I found a place on the shores of Flathead Lake in northwestern Montana I decided to use for my free bonus week. The area is understandably very popular in summer. The place has much less attraction for most people in winter, though. To me it's close enough to Glacier National Park, Whitefish Ski Mountain, and Blacktail Ski Area to be an appealing destination for winter outdoor activities in a new place. I always like trying new ski hills. While I'm at it I'll also stop for some skiing at Jackson Hole and nearby Grand Targhee on my way north, do a little exploring, and meet up with my cousin Deb and her husband Jon in Bozeman. Who says two weeks in the northern Rockies in February can't be a great vacation?
