Island Hopping in the Azores, Summer 2016

Back in 2016 I sent over four weeks in the mainland of Portugal and a week on Madeira and absolutely loved it. The part of the country I didn't make it to was the Azores, the volcanic island archipelago on the mid-Atlantic Ridge nearly a thousand miles west of the mainland. I've since been eyeing the Azores as a possible destination for a stand alone few weeks trip, possibly on a tour with Explore, the tour company I sometimes travel with. The time now seems right. My mother's condition (advanced Alzheimer's) is relatively stable, so I feel I can take the risk in booking a trip. I've been looking for a destination to get away for a few weeks that's not in continental North America, that's not too distant a flight, and for which summer is the prime season to visit. The Azores fit perfectly. I initially booked my flights with the intent of traveling independently in the Azores. I then determined that inter-island flights, hotels in a place where there aren't many hostels, and car rentals in a place without much public transportation were going to be fairly costly as well as being a lot of work. So I ended up booking a two week trip with Explore after all to visit five of the nine islands with a week on my own to go to the western group of islands.
