The Netherlands - Searching for the Golden Age, April 2017

So among all the exotic places I've been traveling to and all the remaining ones I haven't been to yet but could still go, why am I going somewhere as common on most peoples' travel itineraries as Amsterdam? Everybody goes there! Especially people who are into legal pot and prostitutes and etcetera, of which I am not one. Well, first of all April is a prime time to visit the Netherlands if you're into horticulture because the bulb fields at Keukenhof Gardens are usually at their peak during the latter part of the month, depending on the weather through the winter and spring. Second, the Netherlands is a country I've seen little of so far, always bypassing it in favor of less similar places. Amsterdam was included for two nights and a day when on my whirlwind European coach tour with my family in 1985. I also spent a day in Maastricht in the Dutch Limburg in 2003, but that's been it for me and Holland so far. One other reason I passed on it as a destination for many years was that the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam was closed for renovation for many years and only a small part of its collection on display in temporary locations. The Rijksmuseum has been all fixed up for a while and it's April so the flowers will be glorious. This is the time to go! But I plan to see more than just Amsterdam. I like to get to know a country when I travel there and see more than just the capital city and most famous sites. My plan is to base myself in three places over a two week time period, probably Rotterdam and Apeldoorn for several days as well as more time in Amsterdam, making each as a base for seeing nearby cities and sites. I've gotten to like renting a car when I travel, but there's no need for one in a country where distances are so short and public transportation so good.
