Southern Road Trips, Spring & Fall 2018

On the road again! I’ve truly been getting a little stir crazy after spending most of my time over the last six months in New Jersey. I’m way past due for an escape. My mom’s condition seems to be quite stable, so I can get away for a while to somewhere I can easily return if I need to do so. Like my 2008 and 2014 road trips south, I plan for this one to mix visits with friends and relatives with some sightseeing, ideally mostly places I haven’t been before but without much of a set agenda and no fixed return dates. I tentatively plan to get as far south as Florida and as far west as Memphis, but things may change as I move along. My initial plans changed before I even left the house with a last minute decision to skip a first stop in the Washington, DC area and instead head directly for Virginia. Spring is a good time to travel to the Southeast since it is neither hot nor cold and is also the best time of the year for gardens. Having spent most of the summer in Canada and Europe, I decided to add entries from my fall Appalachian road trip to West Virginia and surrounding areas to this blog. October is good weather season for hiking as well as usually for fall foliage viewing. I've covered most of the east quite extensively in my travels, but West Virginia is still a state I've mostly passed through rather than explored significantly up to this point.
