Quebec & Maritime Canada, Summer 2018

One by one I’m checking destinations off my travel list. A few biggies in recent years have included Cuba, Yucatan Peninsula, Central America, Portugal, Andalusia, Camino de Santiago, Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland, and the western Balkans among others. Newfoundland has been near the top of my list for some time as the only Canadian province I haven’t been to and also a very remote corner of North America. Of course, Newfoundland is far away and requires passing through either Quebec and the other Maritime Provinces to get to, places I have been to long, long ago and would like to explore in more depth as a middle-aged adult rather than as a teen sitting in the back seat on a family road trip. The more I read about Newfoundland and eastern Canada the more interesting it gets to me. My tentative plan as I set out on this road trip is to hit Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, and sights in the Laurentians and north shore of the Saint Lawrence on my way north. I’ll then head north into the interior of Quebec and across Labrador on the Trans-Labrador Highway. From there it’s a short ferry to Newfoundland island and then a longer one to Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. I plan to explore both Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in greater depth than I did as a teen and possibly even go to remote Ile de Madeleine. Altogether I plan to be on the road about seven weeks, similar to the southern road trip I just completed. That is, of course, if they let me in. This trip is approximately the same one I planned to do six years ago in summer 2012. However, I was questioned at the border and denied entry because I had a DUI in early 2007. Apparently that’s grounds for being denied entry to Canada for ten years. They told me what to do to petition for a “pardon”, but that would involve a lot of paperwork and some money. So I figured I’d just wait and try again after ten years, technically April of this years since I completed my “sentence” of some alcohol abuse classes in April 2008. Wish me luck!
