Eastern Europe, Autumn 2018

“Back to Europe again so soon?” you may be wondering? Yes, I have to admit to that being at home in the retirement village in New Jersey is dreadfully boring. After I’ve been on the road for a while I’m ready to rest my weary head for a bit in my own bed, but it doesn’t take long until I’m eager to hit the road again. They call it “Itchy Feet”. Mine must be among the itchiest. It’s November, though. Shouldn’t I be heading someplace warm and sunny? It seems like I should be, but when I got to thinking about some such possibilities that had been on my mind for a while, I found I wasn’t feeling very enthused – Hawaii, Caribbean, Cape Verde. I do want to go to those places, but Europe keeps calling me back. I picked up some travel guidebooks for exercise machine reading at a book discount store in Kentucky on my October road trip there. The Ukraine and Hungary guidebooks, places that seemed like potential summer destinations in the years ahead to me were the ones that started getting me excited. So why not go to Eastern Europe in the cold, dark season before the holidays? My focus is Belarus and Ukraine, two countries I haven’t been to yet, but will be starting in Poland and mostly likely finishing with Hungary and Austria. Given the time of year this trip will focus more on cities and cultural sites that the great outdoors. It’s something different and quite spur of the moment, since I started thinking about it seriously and planning it out on Monday, and booked a discounted Thursday night flight on Tuesday. Whoever said I don’t know how to be spontaneous.
