Caribbean Windward Isles, February 2019

It doesn’t take long at home before I get the itch to hit the road again, in this case only about a month since I returned from my last trip in Europe. Island hopping in the Caribbean Windward islands has been on my mind for several years and a trip I had tentatively set for myself for this period of time. I booked a $98 one-way flight to Guadeloupe for January 14th, but my mom’s condition took a turn for the worse and she passed away shortly after midnight on the 13th. Within two and a half weeks I found much of what I needed to take care of with the house was completed and scheduled a furniture donation pickup with Salvation Army for February 19th. Hey, that gives me almost three weeks until I have to be in New Jersey again! Let’s do that Caribbean trip again after all. Initially I had planned to start in Guadeloupe and follow the whole Windward chain of eight or nine islands south to Tobago and possibly Trinidad over about five weeks. My new plans for two and half weeks are pared down somewhat to just four islands which can be accessed by ferries from each other – Guadeloupe, Martinique, Dominica, and Saint Lucia, the first two being French territories and the latter two independent nations that were former British colonies. Those will be my 91st and 92nd countries as I inch toward the century mark. My impression of these islands has been of very expensive resorts. However, I have been finding some reasonably priced accommodation online in most of them. I suppose if I rent a car for a few days on each of the islands that is also potential shelter, although it might not be as safe to car camp as in North America and Europe. Overall I anticipate a mild adventure in the former British and French Caribbean.
