Northern Rockies Life, Winter 2019-2020
This will be my first blog of the 2020s. Years pass and decades pass making it possible to recall the changes in the world and one’s life over time. 2020 seems significant because it means we’re a fifth of the way through the new century, while the change of the millennium doesn’t seem all that long ago. One of the big concerns leading up to 2000 was the “Y2K” frenzy. The world’s computer systems supposedly weren’t designed with the change of the millennium in mind and catastrophe was going to take place. Of course, it went off with barely a hitch, lots of hype about nothing. Twenty years ago I had recently bought mu first (and so far only) house in Highlands Ranch, a southern Denver suburb, working a boring standard office job with U.S. Bank, and settled into what I thought at the time would be long-term suburban steadiness. Well, that didn’t last for long. I’ve had multiple changes and adventures in those twenty years and am not back at a point where I’m contemplating settling down for good somewhere. Of course, that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop traveling. And who knows, maybe it won’t be long before I move on on a whim. The winter of 2019-2020 will be my first living in Montana. Climate averages indicate it’s really not as cold as one might expect for this latitude, only about 7*F colder on average than Denver, but I still feel like a he-man braving the Montana winter. And I do anticipate being in the northern Rockies for most of the winter, with a break of about three weeks in Hawaii in January. I three week-long or longer ski trips planned to Wyoming, Utah, and Canada and anticipate doing a lot of skiing and other winter activities in the Bozeman area since I’m armed with two different ski passes. And historical climate averages indicate that December is the coldest month in Montana by a smidge, so that means the worst of the cold should soon be over, right? Maybe not, but I can hope.
