Oregon & Jefferson Trails, Autumn 2020

There’s the old saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Back last fall and winter as I was contemplating future travels, my tentative plans for autumn 2020 travel were for Asia, probably Korea, Taiwan, Burma, and Hong Kong. Then Covid-19 came along and messed everything up. At least I hadn’t made any reservations for fall travel before the plague began. There’s no reason to sit at home and mope about it, though. Assuming the authorities don’t try to put us all back on home detention again or reinstate quarantine requirements for people entering states, I plan to continue the outdoor-oriented travels I’ve been doing throughout the summer but a bit further afield. My plans for September and much of October include Oregon and the far northern part of California. Or maybe I should say “Jefferson”, what northern California secessionists call their desired state, possibly combined with more conservative non-metropolitan parts of Oregon. With seven to eight weeks on the road possible, I should be able to cover the scenic region in some depth. Although I’ve been through Oregon and the part of California I plan to visit, those visits were long ago (1988, 1995, 2003) and involved more driving than sightseeing and physical activity in the outdoors.
