Yellowstone Country 2021

It is 2021 already and almost a year into the Covid-19 plague. There are supposedly several vaccines out now, but as of mid-January the rollout has been slow. In any event, my place in the queue for getting my shot is such that it may well be four to six months if not longer until I get mine, and probably much longer until enough people are vaccinated around the world for travel to get back to normal. Thus, I don’t need a crystal ball to predict that my travel options for 2021 will again be relatively close to home. I’m optimistic for things getting back to near normal in 2022 but not counting on it. What is often known as Yellowstone Country extends far beyond the roughly 2,500 square miles in the national park’s boundaries. It includes the much larger Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana, and in Montana also applies to much land beyond in the southern portion of the state along the Yellowstone River Valley. Whereas during 2019 and 2020, both my summer and winter travels took me beyond what is designated as Yellowstone Country, looking at 2021 I anticipate most of it to be closer to home. That’s the case for a number of reasons. First, I’m buying a new house which should be ready roughly late spring or early summer, so I anticipate foregoing very long road trips in the months on either side of completion. The ski pass I purchased for the 2020-21 season is for nearby Big Sky resort, rather than a multi resort pass which I had last year. And two of the guided group backpacking trips I have booked onto for the summer are in Yellowstone National Park. It’s not necessary to venture too far from home when you already live in paradise.
