Hawaii - Second Time in Two Years, 2022

Hawaii must have made quite the impression on me. It took me 52 years to get to the state the first time, and now I’m heading back only two years later. I was actually quite impressed with what I saw and vowed to return and see the remaining islands. However, circumstances are such that it makes sense to travel again to Hawaii now en lieu of foreign destinations I might otherwise have chosen were it not for the continuing hassles of international travel around the Covid-19 plague. Oddly enough, the last time I was the slightest bit sick was a cold I caught in Hawaii two years ago just before Covid-19 made its big debut in America. “Maybe you had Covid!” people say when I tell them that. However, I had only normal cold symptoms and am sure that is all it was. Besides the ease of travel relative to foreign destinations, the other circumstance influencing my trip plans is the relocation of my friend Marc from Hong Kong to Honolulu. After five years in Hong Kong, during which he invited me and I made vague plans to visit as some point, Marc found himself a new gig with the only private equity firm in Hawaii. This time I didn’t waste any time making plans to visit him, although his work schedule and another possible relocation to the U.S. East Coast makes it such that I probably won’t be able to spend that much time with him. My 2020 Hawaii trip covered Oahu and the Big Island in about 2 ½ weeks. That leaves Kauai, Molokai, and Maui. I also hope to do a daytrip by ferry from Maui to Lanai. And with Marc based on Oahu, I’ll be returning there for four days too as part of my 3 ½ weeks in the islands. My friend John, who has traveled with me in the past, will join me for about ten days of that on Kauai and Oahu, after which I’ll be on my own for Molokai and Maui. I’m ready for some time in paradise. It feels like I’ve hardly seen the sun all December in Montana, and the last two weeks have been frigid with temperatures as low as -20*F.
