Greater Hungary, Spring 2022

Well, I finally get to travel abroad again after two years of plague travel restrictions. It will be over three years since I was last outside the U.S. and Canada (just before lockdown began). Hopefully I will have better luck this time than when my April-June 2020 travel plans to Greece got suddenly dashed because of Covid. The Russian invasion of Ukraine creates a small risk for travel to Central Europe, but it seems quite unlikely the conflict will spill over in the short term. Why Hungary? Well, it is one of many places in Europe I still want to explore further. I have been there twice but only to Budapest, and I’d like to see more of the country. I really enjoy the history, culture, and food of Central Europe. Having been to most of the bigger cities in Europe, when I travel there I now like to concentrate on one country or region at a time in depth rather than flit around to many. The plan is to spend a few days in Budapest and then rent a car to travel around the country in a mostly clockwise loop with short forays into neighboring countries – Slovakia, Romania, Slovenia, and Austria (not Ukraine). That’s why I am calling it Greater Hungary. Although I do not intend to travel to deeply into Romania, it will be a new country for me, my 93rd. The time of year and amount of time I want to devote to travel this season, about five weeks, make Hungary a fitting destination.
