Pacific Northwest, Autumn 2023

Maybe the second time around will be more successful than the first. In September 2020 I started out on what I expected to be a quite long trip to the Pacific Northwest focusing on Oregon and far northern California. Just a few days into my trip some of the worst forest fires in history flared up across the West Coast states and Oregon in particular. The burned for weeks and nixed my overall plans for lots of hiking in the Cascades. Although the national parks and many other areas remained open, air quality was such that hiking was not practical. Who wants to experience the mountains when scenery is obscured by such dense smoke? I cut my trip short significantly and focused on the coast where conditions were not as bad for the most part. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Autumn 2023. This was an extremely wet winter in California, although not necessarily so in Oregon and Washington. I am planning a six-week trip, joined by my friend Rodrigo, focused on two events – Pendleton Roundup on September 15th and an annular (not full) eclipse on October 14th for which I plan to be in the desert in northern Nevada. In between will be time in the Portland and Bend areas, Mount Shasta, and Crater Lake and Lassen National Parks.
