Cape Verde - Exotic West African Isles, January 2024

Cape Where? I suspect that’s what many people might be thinking. It is kind of like when I went through West Africa in 2007 and had blog entries from Mauritania. “Now you’re just making places up,” someone jokingly said. Cape Verde, officially known by its Portuguese name of Cabo Verde, is a real place, a volcanic archipelago of nine islands located several hundred miles west of the westernmost point of mainland Africa. It is arguably somewhat of an exotic destination but has been catching on with sun-seeking European tourists. I will be visiting four islands on a hiking-oriented group tour with KE Adventure, the same company with whom I traveled in Tenerife and La Gomera on the Canary Islands. I guess I became intrigued by Cape Verde as a possible destination in 2016 when I first learned about KE and went on a trip with them in Guatemala in 2016. It has been “on my list” since then. It is another place where people primarily go to soak up the sun on the beach in near-guaranteed sunshine and warmth, and KE is about the only company I’ve found that offers anything like this trip. After five weeks in the Canary Islands, I’m up for a destination that is a bit more of an adventure. Although not technically on the continent, it will also be my first time in Africa since the beginning of 2008.
