Northwest Turkey, November 2024
My winter 2024-25 trip is primarily to the Arabian Peninsula, a two-month overland trip from Dubai to Amman preceded by a week in Dubai before the tour begins. At some point my friend Rodrigo decided to join me for the week in Dubai. His time constraints and family obligations are such that two months on a truck in the Arabian desert is not an option for him. However, to make his flight and travel time worthwhile, we decided to extend our travels a bit at the front end to make his total trip close to three weeks. We’ll have about 10 days in Turkey before we head to Dubai. Turkey is a country with an enormous amount to see, one I have been to once back in 2006 when I only managed to take in a small portion of what the country has to offer. That will again be the case this time around. Our focus will be on Istanbul for five night and four full days followed by a five-day car rental and road trip around the Sea of Marmara west from Istanbul to take in the Gallipoli battlefields, former Ottoman capital of Bursa, and ancient Greek sites of Troy and Pergamon/Bergama, most UNESCO World Heritage sites. Why not more time in Turkey? Time constraints but also the fact that November is not the most opportune time weatherwise in much of the country. I’ll be back again to see more of it in the years ahead, I’m sure.
