1066 and All That

The government's plans to upgrade the history GCSE syllabus means it now includes a case study on the Norman Conquests, Battle of Hastings and Pevensey Castle. This is, naturally, very convenient if you happen to live in East Sussex, but not so useful if you live at the other end of the country. The girls' school ruled out a trip to see the area, as it couldn't be done in a day, but suggested that we might like to take them on a field trip of our own. My ears pricked up at the sound of an excursion. I have organised jollies on much more flimsy excuses. We packed a bag.
