Africa first

I was planning to drive around the world. After having driven across Australia in 2013, I picked up the car there in 2015, then shipped to Valparaiso, Chile. Drove down to Tierra del Fuego and up to Buenos Aires. Crossed from Argentina into Brazil. Skirted the Mato Grosso del Sur into Bolivia. Came through the mountains North of Lake Titicaca into Peru and drove up, through the desert into Ecuador. Drove further North to Colombia and shipped to Panama. Crossing Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico brought me into the US, Canada and Alaska. I was planning to ship to Asia, then try to find my way through Mongolia, Kazachstan, Iran and Turkey back to Amsterdam. But I had to change my plan because I contracted a tropical disease while trying to dig my car out of the mud in Belize. Which caused some delay and I didn't want to end up in Siberia in winter. So I drove from Alaska to New York and returned to Europe in order to find another route around the globe in Spring. Russia, Mongolia, the Stans and then through the Middle East to Africa seemed an option. Or Africa first and finally, perhaps, Asia. Spring 2017 arrived, time to go on. I decided to go to Africa first, because over time I got convinced, one shouldn't save the best for last. You never know what happens next. After having driven through Egypt, the Sudan and Ethiopia I left my car in Nairobi, Kenya and flew home for my father's 100th birthday. After the party I returned to Africa for a seven week trip around lake Victoria, through Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania. Spent some time on the white beaches of Zanzibar. Unfortunately I fell and ruptured a shoulder so I had to return to the Netherlands again for medical examination. Returning to Africa I started the last lap of my journey, through Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. From Windhoek I had to return home again, because my 100 year old father passed away. Now I’m finally doing the last stretch of this continent. After this, I really don't know what will happen. Chances are I will never finish the trip around the world. But as they say, it’s not about the destination, but about the journey. It really is. Especially when you're accompanied by your children, family and friends, like I am from time to time. Sharing the experience doubles the fun. Sofar the trip has been amazing, especially because of the beautiful people and unbelievable scenery. Everywhere. If you follow the news the world is hell for millions and millions of people, but if you don't follow the news, the world is paradise. I consider myself one of the most lucky people in the world to be born on the right side of the news. I hope I can keep it that way.
