Thirty Sydney Fountains

On the morning of October 18, 2014 I woke up and felt well for the first time in days. I'd spent the whole week at home, sick with a bug, and I desperately wanted to: get out of the house, do something constructive, learn something, have lunch and get some exercise. "What the heck!" I said to Steven. "Let's go on a fountain hunt. I'm sure we could find twenty ...no, thirty! At least!" "Go back to sleep," said Steven. Which I did, because it was 5am. Later, as we made our way to the city I created some rules for the hunt... The fountains must be: 1. free to view, 2. outdoors, 3. permanent, 4. moving any volume of water in any direction, and 5. They had to be in the CBD or easy walking distance from it 6. It didn't matter if they were build with private or public money We found a lot of fountains (and we missed a lot too). A word about Sydney fountains: I guess, because Sydney doesn't always have a lot of water to spare - and because Sydney can always rely on the harbour to provide something pretty to look at, the fountains here tend to be small when compared with the works of Europe. We also have a tendency to turn them off when we think nobody's looking. Sydney fountains cover a whole range of styles, varied histories and possess a great sense of fun - mostly. We did our fountain hunt in one day and walked about 25 kilometres in the process (partly because we walked into the city from home). Also, because we were in such a rush, there wasn't time to get the best possible photos, we did what we could then had to move on.
