A Jungle Adventure
Borneo is the third largest island in the world and is divided administratively by three countries: the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, the Indonesian province of Kalimantan, and the independent country of Brunei. Once blanketed almost entirely by rainforest, Borneo is one of the most bio-diverse habitats on Earth, altough much of the forest has now been logged or transformed into ugly palm oil plantations devoid of wildlife. I'd arranged a 3 week trip to Malaysian Borneo (Sarawak and Sabah) to experience a little bit of the local culture and see a lot of wildlife hopefully. All the tour companies I usually used included a climb of the 12,000ft Mt Kinabalu, which I didn't really want to do or pay for, hence, I arranged my own trip. I checked out the accommodation, tours, transport, etc, using Lonely Planet's Borneo guidebook, Trip Advisor, and various internet searches. Rooms are very cheap In Borneo; I wanted a little bit of luxury rather than a dorm bed and in most cases, I could get my own ensuite room with a/c for less than RM100 (£20). Even with this, the trip obviously worked out much cheaper than an organised tour. AirAsia do some cheap promo priced flights if you book far enough ahead, then the prices go up when these are booked up. At the bottom of each blog entry, I have added expenses (RM5 = £1) and links to help anyone planning their own trip.
