Scandinavia

We took this trip in the spring of 2015. The first entry is self-indulgent and has nothing to do with the trip. However, if you are unfamiliar with the Icelandic sagas, but are a fan of prosaic carryings-on, told in flat prose, punctuated by bursts of fratricidal violence, they are recommended. But you have to get a good translation -- unless, like Tolkien, you go all the way and learn old Norse. It is still pretty chilly in Scandinavia at the beginning of May. It had been a cold and snowy winter, and the amount of snow on the mountains in Norway was said to be exceptional. If, like Frances, you are willing to work hard to search for bargains, it isn't necessarily as expensive as people may lead you to believe. After the first entry, I only wrote text for the Norwegian fjords and Aero Island. The best pictures are the fjords and Iceland.
